SOLIDWORKS 2026 – What’s New for PDM?

SOLIDWORKS PDM 2026 introduces several long-requested enhancements that improve file recovery, access control, and vault organization. Combined with features delivered through 2025 service packs, these updates make it easier to manage data, support collaboration, and reduce downtime when issues arise. Our overview video of PDM enhancements for 2026 details the most impactful improvements for this year.

One of the most-requested updates for this year is the ability to transfer ownership of checked-out files. Files can now be recovered from another user (or even another machine) without undoing checkout and losing local changes. This is especially useful when users are unavailable or when a document was left in a checked-out state on an inaccessible workstation (such as when working between a home and office computer).

Additional PDM enhancements in 2026 include:

  • Lower-level folder path visibility, allowing users to navigate to files within the PDM vault without exposing restricted content or requiring them to know the full file path
  • Workflow archiving, making it easier to retire obsolete workflows without disrupting file history

Several enhancements were also introduced throughout the 2025 year via service packs. These enhancements are also included by default in 2026:

  • Expanded image preview support for formats such as DWG, DXF, STEP, and STL
  • Ability to use Convert Tasks to produce eDrawings Web (HTML) files for browser-based viewing
  • Run Search Favorites on load for faster access to saved searches
  • BOM export to CSV with thumbnails, improving clarity when reviewing data outside the vault

Together, these updates reduce administrative overhead, improve file discovery, and make PDM workflows more resilient and user-friendly.
