Opening SOLIDWORKS Composer Files Without Composer

If you need to work with (or share) a Composer file but you (or your recipient) don’t have access to a full license of SOLIDWORKS Composer, you might feel like you’re stuck working with screenshots instead – but that’s not the case! Our latest 2-Minute Tech Tip on SOLIDWORKS Composer Player explains how this no-cost viewer enables anyone to open and interact with Composer files without needing a license.

Composer Player supports standard SMG files, allowing for easy sharing and immediate playback. The lesson walks through key features like:

  • Navigating views and view collections
  • Playing animations and using interactive elements
  • Reviewing technical documentation and taking measurements

Users can also utilize the digger tool, add annotations, and rotate actors—providing a surprisingly robust set of options for a free viewer. It’s especially useful for sharing assembly instructions, training material, or design visuals with stakeholders who don’t use Composer themselves.

For those of you needing to share Composer files with users who don’t have Composer Player, you can save your document(s) as a Composer Package, which includes Composer Player as an EXE file, allowing your viewers to install Composer Player directly.

View, animate, and interact with Composer files—no Composer license required

Composer Player makes it easy to share technical content without sacrificing interactivity. For more in-depth guidance, visit our full SOLIDWORKS Composer course.
